2009 Meeting Programs

June 4th Program Details
Featured Speaker: Dr. Richard L. Taylor
Program Title: "Soap Opera 1864"

The last meeting of the Granville County Genealogical Society, before taking a summer break, will be held at the Richard H. Thornton Library at 6:30 PM June 4, 2009. The program is titled Soap Opera 1864; Dick Taylor will discuss one of the most famous murder cases in Granville County (now Vance County). This is a story of mystery, treachery and murder which took place in 1864 and spanned the years until the death of one of the principals in 1878. Some of the methods of data collection and some of the difficulties encountered when trying to reconstruct an event which occurred 145 years ago will be discussed during the program.

Taylor, who is the society’s vice president, is a retired family physician who was born and raised in Granville County and came back to practice medicine here after finishing his formal education and doing a tour in the US Navy during the Viet Nam era. He and his wife Julia Ann have one son, also living in Oxford.

Meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open to the public and visitors are always welcome. Please join the society members at 6:30 PM June 4, 2009 in the Conference room at the Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford to get a glimpse of life in the late 1800’s.
