2008 Meeting Programs

February 7th Program Details
Featured Speaker: Mrs. Bessye McGhee

In keeping with the tradition of focusing on black families, heritage and culture during Black History Month, the Granville County Genealogical Society 1746, Inc. is honored to have as its speaker for the February 7, 2008 meeting, Mrs. Bessye McGhee. She will discuss Blacks in Granville County.

Mrs. McGhee was born and raised in Granville County and is a graduate of Mary Potter Academy. After finishing school here she earned a Batchelor of Arts, then a Master of Science in Library Science from North Carolina College in Durham, NC. Teacher-librarian in Granville County Schools was her next pursuit. She then married David G. McGhee who was in the Air Force. Following him in his various assignments, took her all over the world, giving her the opportunity to teach in Arizona, California, North Africa and Maine. In 1971, she returned to Granville County and began to teach Civics and World History at J. F. Webb High School. She eventually retired as media coordinator at Hawley Middle School in Creedmoor, NC.

Since retirement she has continued to be very active in various church, social and civic organizations as well as serving on several commissions and boards.

Visitors and members are cordially invited to attend this meeting at 6:30 P.M. February 7, 2008 in the Conference Room at Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford. A very informative and interesting program is anticipated. The meeting is open to the public.
