2006 Meeting Programs

February 2nd Program Details
Featured Speaker: Ms. Sallyann Marable Hobson

Program Title: “In Search of My Ancestors - A Journey of Discovery in a Digital Age”

Following the tradition of focusing on black families, heritage and culture during Black History Month, the Granville County Genealogical Society 1746, Inc. will have as the speaker for their February 2, 2006 meeting, Ms. Sallyann Marable Hobson

Ms. Hobson was born in Newark, New Jersey and is the eldest daughter of Mrs. Ann DeMarino Marable and the late Mr. Edward B. Marable (an Oxford native). She earned her Associate Degree in Illustration from the Parsons School of Design in New York City, NY and is currently a professional medical graphic artist for the Department of the Navy in Bethesda, MD.

A published illustrator and medical artist, Ms. Hobson completed a 5-year project that included over 300 illustrations for an orthopedic surgical procedure book that is used by Orthopedic Residents in training today.

Ms. Hobson retired from the United States Naval Reserve in January 2005 with 27 years of service. She anticipates a 30-year retirement from the Federal Civil Service in 2007. Upon leaving federal service, Ms. Hobson plans to settle in Vance County, NC. As a member of the Granville County Genealogical Society, Ms. Hobson looks forward to continued genealogy research and immersion in North Carolina culture.

Using a variety of sources and research aids, Ms. Hobson began the journey to find her African American ancestral roots in 1997 and is currently focused on tracing her family history before 1800. The program will touch on the methods she used to discover information about her family history, techniques for using the Internet as a research tool, and general tips on working with digital imagery.

Please plan to attend this meeting, which should be a real treat, on February 2, 2006 at 6:30 P.M. in the conference room of the Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford
